Muscari or grape hyacinths as they are sometimes known are a lovely spring flower, and perfect for adding a dash of colour into your wedding.

Flower Corsages

Corsages, the ladies version of a buttonhole. So whats the difference?

A mans buttonhole tends to be smaller, fewer flowers, and is worn upright on the lapel, a corsage however is usually larger, more of a cluster of flowers , and can be worn on the lapel , wrist, handbag or even hat. If worn as a spray corsage on the lapel, the corsage is usually worn with the flowers facing downwards. Just like mens buttonholes, a corsage can be simple, more intricate, contemporary, traditional, small, large, and if worn as a wrist corsage, even more choices - such as will it be secured on a bracelet, ribbon, lace - decisions, decisions....and thats even before we start on colour and flower choice!

Traditionally, the mother of the bride and groom wear a corsage, but obviously nowdays, bridemaids use them sometimes instead of a bridesmaid bouquet ( i opted for this, for my wedding 6 years ago), and some brides extend further to grandparents, female ushers , friends, etc insuring all the bridal party attendants are a part of the wedding flowers preparations.

Buttonholes

So much focus is around the bride on the planning of the wedding, that sometimes the other half of the soon to be newlyweds are forgotten in the finer details. The grooms buttonhole is equally as important as the brides bouquet and the rest of the wedding flowers ( some men might take abit of convincing here), as just like the brides flowers, the gents buttonhole will be shown on their photos forever.

Just like every other aspect of the wedding, buttonholes can be individual. They can be a classic and simple individual flowers, more rustic and a cluster of flowers, small, large, scented, contemporary...you get the picture. So here are a few of our different designs to help you help your groom choose whats right for him.

Funeral Flowers

I've wanted to do a blog post on funeral flowers for some time, however it is always a tricky subject.
I always feel very priviledged when a family requests that we provide the flowers for their loved one because it is their final & most personal gesture and one that we feel a real responsibility to get right. Just as with happy occasions like weddings, we take alot of pride into making the flowers as fitting and personal as possible, for instance using the persons favourite flowers, or colour scheme or tailoring the 'look' of the design to suit eg if they enjoyed gardening, we might create a more natural, fluid arrangement, using cottage garden flowers, herbs and foliage , or for sadly a younger person a more contemporary design.
I have picked out a small selection of our funeral flowers, to show just how beautiful and fitting, even on sad occasion that flowers can be.

Hi everyone, Happy New Year, did you all had a lovely christmas?
I cant believe how quickly the last year has gone but am really looking forward to 2012.
2011 was a really big year for us, as we moved from our shop premises of 5 years to a lovely new shop which can only be described as my dream shop, a self indulgent girlie den, (but hey why not - i spend most of my time here so why not make it perfect) . It makes coming to work everyday pure heaven!
We also provided flowers for an amazing photoshoot which was a featured article in the national wedding press.
We held 3 workshops at christmas time ( of which i will blog some pictures soon!), which was a first for us , and was really enjoyable. We are hoping to plan more in for this year.
And finally 2011 was a really and i mean REALLY busy year for weddings for us. We were honored to provide flowers for lots & lots of newlywed couples over the last year, which took us far and wide, working right through the night on more than one occasion and included my brothers wedding ( i havent blogged this one, as he prefers to remain anonymous on the wonderful web -men !), and two of my lovely friends , whose pics can be seen here and here . 2012 holds another family wedding ahead as my little sister in law has just announced her engagement which we are very excited about.
And on that note, before we make a start on 2012 , I just wanted to show you our last wedding of
2011, and oh my what a lovely one it was...

.....Held at the very lovely Stapleford Park , a venue often frequented by the rich and famous, the quintessential english surroundings were perfect for a December winter wedding. The colourscheme was white and silver, and included lots of roses - the brides favourite and amaryllis ( the ultimate festive flower).

Vendella Roses

These are pretty images from a wedding we did back in September.

I absolutely love Vendella roses, Vendella are the slightly peachy shade roses in the photographs.

Vendella open very quickly ( but last a long time ), and when they are fully open they look almost porcelain. They are a rose, that on their own appear cream but placed next to an ivory rose look a slightly warmer shade. They also lovely against all shades of wedding dress. Very nice indeed.

A Hint Of Winter

Well folks, whether we like it or not winter is on its way...and what a lovely choice of textures we get to use as a florist .

As im sure you know I am a big fan of using seasonal flowers and so a couple of weeks ago, we started to give our weddings a hint of winter with a few berries, a bit of waxflower and some winter white heather ( a little bit of goodluck for the bride)

This Christmas time we will be hosting 2 workshops teaching you how to create your very own 'Christmas Doorwreath'.

Like all forms of floral design making a doorwreath is fun, you can be very creative with it, and it is so satisying hanging it on your front door knowing you have made it with your own fair hands!

Whats Included -
We will take you through the steps of creating a base, choosing lovely fresh winter foliages ( provided by us and included within the price) and constructing your doorwreath. As you get to choose from a selection of materials, you can tailor your own wreath to suit your own tastes , totally bespoke to you!
Wreaths last a long time so whichever date you choose, your doorwreath will look great for christmas.

Prices are £40 - all materials are included, just bring some sharp scissors/secateurs and an apron if you are messy!

Wedding Flowers for Vintage and Cake

A few weeks ago another one of my lovely friends got married. Some of you may already know Julie who runs her cake and china hire business Vintage and Cake ( she may even have provided you with your wedding cake!)... well it was Julies turn to be the bride and what an amazing wedding it was.
Every little detail had been thought of, and the whole day was so personal to them, at the vows we all were blubbering !
Anyway i thought i woud share with you all of the lovely little details that made this wedding special

The beautiful bride, carrying a lovely bouquet that we made ,a mixture of 'meadow' style flowers...

In Julies bouquet, we used lots of small pretty informal flowers, such as lily of the valley, lavender, stocks, scabiosa, and combining them with beautiful garden roses. As a finishing detail we bound it with string to maintain the more rustic and informal feel of the wedding theme

Pretty basket that we filled with flowers for the entrance doorway...

Lovely wristcorsages, with lace for the bridesmaids....

The mens buttonholes were an informal cluster of astrantia and lavender which we bound with string for a more rustic feel...

Lots of lovely bottles that Julie and Ben had collected , that we then filled with a mixture of informal flowers for the centrepieces...

Lots of lovely jamjars, tied with string were the finishing touch around the venue, including using as chair ends for the cermony.

Vintage Pinks In Autumn

Muted pinks are still a really popular colourscheme , however once summer has passed ,i think it's really nice to give them seasonal feel mixing in some lovely textures that are abundant this time of year. Here we included some lovely dark foliages, which just moved the 'feel' of the flowers from pretty vintage to more autumnal.

My Friends Wedding

A few weeks ago , my very lovely friends Aimee and Anthony tied the knot.
Aim's opted for a lovely white, green colourscheme, using soft girlie flowers which complimented her beautiful lace dress, and also was in keeping with the rural setting of the wedding.
For the bridal bouquet, we kept it very simple with ivory roses, white hydrangea and clusters of pearls bound in lace ribbon.

For the grownup bridesmaids we switched to a pale green hydrangeas, and made cute little rose and gypsophlia posies for the little ones.

The church was a pretty little country church in Aimees home village of Old Dalby, so again we wanted the flowers to be really cute and pretty , simple hydrangea posies tied to the gateposts..

'Love' pew ends waiting to be placed into position....

We then moved these, after the service to the beautiful staircase at the venue..

And finally the pretty centepieces to match...

Sorry it has been so long since our last post, the last few weeks have been a wedding whirlwind!
However, i hope this makes up for the little delay ...this truly beautiful wedding was sooooo my cup of tea, I almost squeaked with excitement when the lovely bride Lucy chose us as her wedding florist. Pretty, pink, roses, hydrangeas - what more could a girl want......

The beautiful marquee was a traditional pole marquee, which meant of course another lovely feature to decorate..

The top table... the plinths and urns used in these pedestals behind are both available to hire from us

These centrepieces looked beautiful against the white backdrop of the marquee. The stunning vases and mirror plates were also hired from us.

Wow wow wow .......

A lovely idea for favours, we filled these little glass vases with tiny pink and white spray roses which doubled up as the place name setting

Its always nice when Im asked to coordinate flowers with a more unusual dress or theme, and this was certainly one cool bride. Opting away from the norm, Jacqueline wore a 50's purple prom style wedding dress , which for me meant a nice full handtied bouquet to coordinate. We kept the bouquet nice and natural of course, but adding in abit of soft colour to highlight, and i think these great images show it worked perfectly!.

I thought i would show these images of a recent wedding that we did. More and more couples are looking for a rustic, infomal feel to their wedding flowers which we personally love.

Trailing bouquets dont have to be fixed, rigid, and dated - they can be flowing, handpicked, and also handtied like the one above, and who wants a wired traditional buttonhole anymore? Not us! we love these little tied clusters

Carnival Window

This saturday 9th July is Melbourne Carnival . i love carnival day, it feels quintessentially english and creates a real buzz in the village. It's quite exciting seeing all of the floats and band march through melbourne, and feels very nostalgic! ( Im secretly jealous as i always wanted to be on a float when i was 'ickle)
This years Carnival theme is 'As Seen on Screen', where as shop owners we have the opportunity to enter our window in the window dressing competition. As this is our first carnival in our lovely new shop we decided to involve the local infant school to help us decide what 'screen' inspiration our window should be. Over 60 children, aged 6 and 7 designed a window for us, and we picked 'Olivias' - The Secret Garden as the winner of our window.
We have displayed her original design in our window, along with our interpretation of it.
Fingers crossed we win the competition !, and thankyou to all of the little ones who helped us with their drawings x

Earlier in the year i was absolutely thrilled to be asked to participate in this shoot, photographed by wonderful wedding photographer Christian Ward . The concept was a vintage gypsy themed wedding, and i was asked to create a suitable bridal bouquet and table flowers with a slightly bohemian feel . We've Moved !

Here it is.... my dreamy beautiful new flower shop. I absolutely heart every inch of it and cant wait to show customers old and new our beautiful seasonal floral designs here .

Just a little stroll around the corner from our old home, we are now within the gorgeous new building of 'Williams Yard', very easy to find on 'Derby Rd'

The ground floor area is filled with delightful flowers and plants , made into bouquets and arrangements ready to go if you are in a hurry, with also a gorgeous selection of individual flowers if you would like to choose your own. We also have a lovely snug wedding consultation area in our hideaway upstairs, perfect for discussing bridal flowers over a cuppa.

Beautiful Blue....

Our shop was a sea of blue flowers last week, and what a beautiful sight it was !
Using blue hydrangeas and delphiniums for the centrepieces , and tiny cornflowers and muscari to add a splash of colour into the bridal flowers, this is definately a colour we love....

Stunning centrepieces using our hired martini vases ....

Along with the gorgeous blue muscari, we used sweetpeas, lily of the valley, roses and sweet williams in the bridal and bridesmaid bouquets . The scent was divine.

Gents buttonholes...
We really enjoyed making these tiny headbands for the little bridesmaids...

And for the older bridemaids, pretty combs with roses and sweetpeas

A little last thought....
If you are thinking of blue as a floral colour scheme, beautiful as it is, it is not a colour that is obtainable all year around. Spring and summer a big yes, autumn and winter no no no. These flowers are seasonal and that is what makes them so special !

Royal Wedding Flowers

So what did you all think of the Royal Wedding? Wow ! is all I can say, everything was absolutely perfect. Kates gorgeous wedding dress was stunning ( lace is always a winner in my book), Pippa looked the beautiful bridesmaid, and of course our eyes were on the flowers, which again were just breathtaking.
Whites, creams and greens is a popular colourscheme for many brides, and as we look back over the british royal weddings of this century it seems it is the firm favourite with our future Queens, princesses and duchesses!

A stunning small wired bouquet of lily of the valley, hyacinth pips and sweet william ( a lovely touch of including a flower with Williams name)
The scent of this bouquet would of been beautiful, as each one of Kate's chosen flowers are scented, and of course it contains the lucky sprig of myrtle included in all royal wedding bouquets.

Autumn Kelly to Peter Phillips May 2008

Another beauty, many brides aren't a fan of trailing bouquets but i personally love them!

If they are kept really loose and flowing like this, and not stiff / formal they look soft and romantic. In this bouquet - roses, lily of the valley and stephanotis, with a lily of the valley buttonhole for the groom.

I dont think anyone will forget this bouquet, just like everything in the 80's it followed the trend more is more. But with a dress that huge, this bouquet needed to be big! Every single flower , foliage and leaf was individually wired, which would of taken hours to make. The florist would definately had a sleepless night the night before. Roses and stephanotis were the main flowers for Diana's bouquet.

I have been trawling through archives to try to find out the types of flowers our Queen had in her bouquet. Its very difficult to see from these older photographs, I have read that it was white phalenopsis orchids but this doesnt seem to fit with our english theme. What do you think?

Ivy & Moss

Happy New Year ! Our first wedding of 2011 was a little challenge for us. The theme of the wedding was 'Ivy' in honor of our brides grandma by the same name. Our client had a very clear vision from the outset of how the wedding was to look & i think we turned her vision into reality.

Being early January, it was to have a wintery feel, and using predominantly ivy, moss, with a few white flowers we transformed the venue into a winter woodland.

The key decoration were balls of moss & ivy which we made and hung from the ceiling of the venue . Next to these were small glass votives which would of looked so pretty when lit later in the day.

Instead of traditional centrepieces, we provided trays of moss and ivy which our bride then decorated with candles, crystals & bubbles.

I was delighted to provide flowers for this very cool photoshoot, which was organised by the very talented Abbey at Sugalily

The House of Sugalily provide amazing luxury social stationery ,greetings cards and wedding stationery. I personally LOVE abbey's work and definately recommend any brides out there to take a look at sugalily wedding stationery.

For the flowers, this bridal bouquet contained white hydrangea ( abbeys favourite) gypsophlia, roses and herbs . Lovely.

Its was a perfect winters day, with a small scattering of snow and bright blue skies.

The theme was white with a touch of purple, with roses, anemones and rannuculus.

We cant wait to see the official photos of this wedding, as we know the bride will look stunning. Watch this space for pictures

Silver sparkles

A lovely twinkley winter wonderland wedding around the colour paletter of silver, white and pale pink.

We love the soft snowy rannuculus used in the bouquets & buttonholes, combined with kochia & brunia for a wintery look.

For the venue, we made crystal trees using willow and birch, and coordinated the top table with our handmade birch hearts. Everything looked so pretty against pure white linen, white chair covers and sashes.

The first of our winter weddings

This is the first of this years winter weddings, and we love it.

This lovely bride and groom opted for amaryllis as their key flower using highlights of seasonal materials such as hypericum, twisted hazel, skimmia & waxflower.

This fits perfectly with the current snowy weather we are having, and the venue with the snowy backdrop was just dreamy.

We have a few differently themed winter weddings coming up, so keep an eye on the blog for more interpretations of this festive season.

Goodbye to autumn

Sadly the beautiful colours of autumn will soon be coming to a close, so we decided to get out and make the most of the gorgeous countryside before the dull days & bare trees of winter set in.

These photographs were taken around one of my favourite places, the Chatsworth estate.

Like most people working in a creative industry & of course like other florists I am influenced by nature & the natural world. Constantly absorbing different colours , textures, materials , it's so easy to be inspired by our gorgeous surrounding, which can then be translated into designs for wedding work, bouquets, sympathy design, anything really! We have a big bag of goodies in our stockroom of collected material, dried bark, nuts, twigs etc that are fabulous items to get creative with back at the shop!

I just love the colours in these images from the weekend..

Autumn Weddings

I love autumn . After spring , it is my favourite time of year. For florists, it means a burst of colours such as oranges, red, limes, browns that are not used that often, and lovely textured materials to work with like berries, twigs and beautiful colourful foliages.

We have a few autumn weddings coming up which i will do my best to take pics of, although with the duller light it is not easy for a novice photographer!

Over the summer, we have decorated lots of church entrances with arches of flowers. Here a just a few pics. If your church doesnt have an arch or you are having a civil ceremony, then why not consider garlands on gates or around a window like the ones above .

Arches and garlands create a stunning focal point and will be the perfect backdrop for your photographs.

Hannah & Robs Vintage wedding

I know i say this practically every time, but this really is one of my favourite weddings to date.

Sheffield based couple Hannah and Rob, opted for a vintage wedding with a retro twist as their fabulous theme.

Combining traditional blooms in quirkier colours, and adding in more retro flowers such as craspedia and gyp, the aim was to give a vintage/nostalgic feel with an edge of coolness without being too girlie/pretty.
The guests at the evening reception had a fun surprise with our dressed cake stands in each table which had the top tier dressed with old skool sweets like flying saucers !

The beautiful china was supplied by my friend Julie at vintage and cake who had her hands full with baking all of the lovely cakes at the afternoon tea/wedding breakfast and with also doing the styling on the day.

Photographs were kindly provided to us by photographer Richard Newman (richard.newman@hotmail.com) and also Ben at Vintage and Cake.

A big thankyou to the lovely Leopold Hotel in Sheffield for being so helpful on the day.

Gypsophlia

This is a flower that is definately making a comeback. I always have loved these pretty white flowers, but unfortunately like certain other flowers, supermarkets has devalued gypsophlia by including it in plain uninspiring bunches which has caused many of people to 'go off' it.

Used in the right way, 'gyp' is no longer a simple filler flower, it can be made to look vintage or contemporary, used en masse it looks so impactive , and right now we are using it alot in wedding work. Watch this space as the trend catches on . You heard it here first.

The story.... bride lives in australia, bride is not returning home until the week of the wedding, florist has one week to interpret theme & select dream wedding flowers.

The brief.... flowers to compliment bridesmaids dress colour of russett (a lovely but tricky colour pinky/coral/brown), flowers must appear rustic, yellow to be brought into centrepieces to tie in with places names and other table decoration.

Dolce Vita

Ok, ill admit it, some people love them and each to their own but generally gerberas & cala's arent one of my favourite flowers . However,...teamed with the beautiful dolce vita rose or mimi eden sprays and im listening. This bride got it right! I love these roses, i really do. The dolce vita is scented (oh yes), large and just so gorgeous. I even like the name, dolce vita, makes me feel like i can speak a language. And mimi eden spray roses, im just a sucker for every time.

Perfect for a pink wedding and if you have a pink AND cream colour scheme you get the best of both worlds ! x

Some real lovelies in this wedding. Peonies, hydrangea, lily of the valley, stocks - gorgeous. All within a white/cream/green colourscheme with just a hint of pale pink.

One lovely and unusual part of this wedding was that we used jasmine plants for some of the centrepieces. A long lasting, affordable option which can be reused as presents for guests. Incorporating plants in wedding decoration is something that is quite common in europe but us Brits havent caught onto that just yet .

The other centrepieces were the lovely country style jugs, which our bride hired from us. Perfect for a more informal theme.

I 'heart' this Nostalgic Wedding

I cant tell you how much i love this wedding.

Taking this back to how weddings used to be, Lisa & Tim opted for a completely personal, village hall type wedding in the beautiful historic village of Melbourne . ( which is where we are also based)

It reminded me of a nostalgic wartime era wedding, and i loved the fact they turned a simple village hall into a quintessentially english wedding venue. When i walked in the room to dress it with flowers, it completely had the wow factor for me. The room was so sweet, and back in the day I could visualise a gramophone playing in the corner. They even provided little pink bon bons in vintage china. A real blast from the past.

For the flowers, Lisa gave us a brief of pink and cream, but then allowed us the freedom to use whichever flowers we thought we complement.

For me, it had to be all my personal favourites roses, hydrangea, peony, stocks which complemented the rural, informal setting of the wedding.

For the church, Lisa hired our bay trees which we decorated for her, and then moved these to the reception venue which was only a short distance away. The wedding was on a lovely sunny day and the happy bride and groom walked from the church to the venue - perfect.

For the reception Lisa collected lots of different containers , and hired a couple from us, for us to fill with flowers, for a mismatch shabby chic look.

To support local suppliers , the food was catered by the highly recommended Mileburne restaurant, also based in Melbourne.

It was so refreshing to be involved in a wedding like this. Thankyou very much Lisa and Tim for allowing us to be involved in your special day. x

Table Inspiration 5 Natural Purple

This table was to coordinate with purple& white table linen / seatcovers.

The deep "cadbury purple" colour theme has been very popular this year, and we have complimented it in a variety of ways from modern, vintage to natural.

This is one of my favourite interpretations of the colourscheme using coordinating flower colours in a very natural way. Lots of deep purples, bright pinks, occasional red with lots of natural foliages and herbs.

We have put rosemary in the chairbacks for an additonal detail

My absolute favourite, mention the word vintage and my ears prick up immediately

I love this table sooo much .

We have used our stunning silver stem vintage vase, and filled with soft pink flowers including roses, hydrangea, peony, lisianthus. And to add to the impact 3 of our glass sundae vases with a beautiful illusion rose in Of course lots of pearls everywhere finishes this look of perfectly .

This table has gorgeous pale pink table runner and chairbacks finished off with a vintage brooch, provided once again by the brilliant tillyboo.

We've created a low level table centrepiece this time, in a lovely fresh green and white colourscheme.

Flowers include roses, rannuculus, lisianthus, hellebore, hypericum - with the finishing touch of granny smith apples and fresh limes!

And for an added twist, why not use apples for the table place setting.

Sorry we've been a little quiet on the blogging front just lately. Its been a crazy couple of weeks with weddings and wedding fayres....but...fear not, there is a bright side to this, we have lots of lovely photos to share with you!

For the last couple of wedding fayres we have partnered with Tillyboo Events to put together a number of different wedding table themes to give our brides a bit of inspiration . We've had great feedback and have lots of images to show, too many for one post, so to keep it short and sweet, i'll blog a different table design each day . How does that sound, good? ......

Glastonbury Inspired Wedding

Over easter you may have seen my facebook or twitter comments describing the glastonbury themed wedding we provided the flowers for . Debbie our lovely bride was an absolute pleasure to work with and provided us with lots of collected treasures from her many festival weekends to make their wedding truly personal.

The main colour scheme was deep purple with cerise pink, however when it came to venue dressing Debbie wanted other colours brought in to give it a informal, happy glasto vibe!

So here we go, onto the finer details

The bouquet, a natural handtied trail of rannuculus, roses, parrot tulips, lisianthus, broom, veronica and mixed foliages .

Rings - Debbie provided this box which we filled with moss for the wedding rings

Windows , we made this 'LOVE' out of fresh moss

Centrepieces - half of the tables were dressed like this , includes moss, birch, germinis, mimosa, veronica, lisianthus

The other tables were dressed with tree like structures that we made from twisted hazel.

The top table was a huge centrepiece about 7 foot high ( thats no joke) , containing a real tree branch which we decorated with coordinating flower balls and the brides little treasures.

And finally a little wishing tree for the guests to write their good wishes on...

This was a really fun wedding, other details included a tippee in the hotel grounds, guests were offered 5 different fruit ciders to drink and flower filled lanterns in the entrance pathway.

Tillyboo events coordinated the wedding and did another great job of the venue styling

We recently took part in the 'Fabulous Places' luxury shopping evening at Blackbrook House, Belper

Fabulous Places.co.uk is a great site promoting the best local independent shops & producers, and we love the fact that we are considered to be one of those.

Blackbrook was filled with gorgeous gifts, homewares, jewellery,food and of course flowers!

We took along lots of lovely spring & mothers day designs which obviously caught someones attention as we were even featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph .

Tim & Jackie Wedding 13th March

Mothers day weekend is busy at the best of times, but this year, we also had a wedding to focus on, which meant alot of extra planning, but it was well worth it as this one was a beauty.

Jackie our bride opted for a gorgeous dress in an unusual 'oyster' colour, so to complement this we opted for creams, browns & dusky pinks. Her dress had lace detailing which gave it a bit of a vintage look , which we tied in with the flowers by using a vintage brooch around the stems. (thanks Abbeyx)

Jackie was quite happy to leave the flower choices to us, so we went for roses ( maroussia, cool water, hypnose, David austin Patience) - all my favourites, and some are scented too! Rannuculus, lilac and eucalyptus. Perfect!

To decorate the venue, the bride and groom opted for low bowl vases, (perfect for reusing bouquets ), which looked lovely against the flickering candlelight. The tables were also dressed with crystals, coordinating table runners, and chair covers.

And finally to decorate the beams, we made 2 rose filled hearts to make it extra special, that went perfectly with the fairy lights hired by tillyboo .

For My Mum....xxx

I am going to dedicate this post to the most special lady in my life, my mum.

My mum, has worked incredibly hard and helped me make my business the established and beautiful flower shop that it is.

Before i was born, my mum was a florist and she obviously passed on her love of flowers and creative streak to me.

I remember when i was around 7 or 8 years old, i had my first flower delivery at school - a tiny little oasis posy of pink and white flowers. I was the proudest girl in the class and can still picture it clearly now.

My mum and I work together and are the best of friends, so mum, Happy Mothers Day, you mean the world to me and I love you all the world and a little donkey ;) Thankyou so much for all of your help. I couldnt manage without you xxxx

An American Wedding in Rural Derbyshire

One of our recent weddings was at the beautiful Shottle Hall , in my home county of rural Derbyshire.

It was quite a special wedding as the bride and groom are based in Seattle, in the big US of A and most of the planning and correspondence was done via email. I only actually met the bride once in the early stages of the preparations, so it was lovely to see our ideas come together.

The colourscheme was chocolate and teal and with the coordination of Sarah from Tillyboo Events , an amazing job was done with the planning so that the leadup all went to smoothly, and the wedding all coordinated together beautifully.

So onto the flowers !...

First task was an 18ft garland which surrounded the feature window as the backdrop for the civil ceremony. Early on in the planning we decided to opt for warmer shades to compliment the chocolate colourscheme, so chose gorgeous vendella and hypnose roses teamed with scented eucalyptus, which had the bluey shade to it to complete the teal colouring in the wedding.

We had to close the shutters whilst putting the garland up as the sun was so bright and we wouldnt have been able to take a photograph (one of the few sunny days we had in feb), but when they were open, the garland and gorgeous tall windows provided the perfect backdrop onto a beautiful countryside view.

The chairs looked gorgeous in the double wraps of teal and chocolate organza, and to finish the look off we supplied tiny chairbacks of white rannuculus, birch and eucalyptus.

For the reception flowers, the bride and groom wanted low arrangements so not to obstruct the eyeline of their guests so we opted for glass bowls filled with their coordinating flowers, with entwined birch inside the bowls.

And finally for the top table, a coordinating central arrangement with rannuculus clusters at the ends of the swags...

The rooms looked really lovely and the bride was very happy with everything. She spent alot of the morning with us, taking photos of the setup for her own memories, so hopefully we will get a few copies to update this post again at some point.

Pretty In Pink

Recently myself and the lovely Sarah from Tillyboo Events made a mockup table for one of our upcoming brides. As you can see, this bride wants the works, pink, crystals, butterflies, wow!

Here table centrepiece is a martini vase filled with glass diamond shaped crystals, beautiful pink stocks (my favourite flower, i absolutely adore the scent of them!), pink rannuculus , tulips and roses. This is going to be coordinated with matching table runner and chairbacks.

And for the finishing touch, i plan to make tiny pink corsages of pink rannuculus to go on each chair back. A lovely suprise for each guest!

Avalanche Roses

There is something really beautiful about avalanche roses, arranged just simply on their own.

They are a lovely large headed rose, cream with a tiny bit of green on the outer petals.

A wedding we did last year focused on this gorgeous roses, and yesterday i received these lovely images of the bouquets we did.

Its early spring, christmas just gone, valentines day almost here, which means lots of men (& women) will have been or about to be, down on bended knee ready to whisper THOSE immortal words , ' Will you marry me?'
This time of year the wedding industry is gearing themselves up ready to showcase their talents at wedding fayres & shows, to all of those about to embark on the journey of wedding planning.
Wedding fayres i admit can be abit daunting at first but they really are the perfect opportunity to see venues dressed for the big day and to discuss ideas with potential suppliers.
For us as a florist, wedding fayres are great as we can be creative, show new designs, 'test the water' with new colour combinations and generally are able to get a feel for the year ahead.

Teresa & Dominic's Winter Wedding

This is one of my favourite weddings to date, the perfect winter wedding, complete with a dusting of snow and bright blue skies.
Teresa's wintery theme was around the colourscheme of white, silver and navy, which we decided to complement with these white frill edged tulips. They almost look like snowflakes . The foliage of silver brunia , kochia and eucalyptus picked out the silver in her colourscheme and gave a wintery collar to the bridal bouquet.

The buttonholes and corsages were coordinated to match.....

We used seasonal flowers and foliages in the large arrangements, including beautiful white amaryllis.

And for a real wintery feel, the table centrepieces were made of twinkley silver birch stems with white phalenopsis orchid heads attached. We filled the vases with clear gel to look like ice and floating pearls with looked like tiny snowballs in the ice. The marquee would of looked spectacular when it started to get dark and by candlelight.

Gayle & Olie

A beautiful wedding we did in october 2009. Our bride, Gayle, wanted a vintage themed bouquet in warmer colours, so we chose a variety of vintage roses, astilbe and hypericum berries to reflect the season, and dusky pink lisianthus to soften.

We introduced some slightly deeper shades in the table centrepieces so they would show up nicely across the room.

A lovely themed wedding and Gayle was really pleased with the result, heres the lovely comments she gave us ....' thankyou so much for such superb flowers. The colours coordinated perfectly and i loved the vintage feel of the amnesia roses. The table arrangements were also perfect. You were a pleasure to work with and very reliable. I had no worried throughout the whole process and you understood my requirements very well' . Everyones happy ! :)

Earlier in the year, i went on a buying trip to the wetlands of Holland . Holland to a florist, is what Las Vegas is to a gambler, pure pleasure!

If you have never been to Holland before (and I dont mean just Amsterdam) , it really is a beautiful and serene country. The dutch are the friendliest and also heathiest people around - they cycle everywhere! The flower industry is truly thriving, and it is wonderful to see a culture that doesnt rely on supermarkets for its flowers. Florists are considered artists, and flowers and plants are a part of everyday lifestyle and living.

A really important part of our trip was to visit some of the growers that supply to me. Every single flower and plant is treated with TLC so that right from the start of the supply chain, we can provide you with best quality, long lasting flowers.

Many flowers are grown in huge temperature controlled greenhouses, every flower is given exactly the amount of water it needs, whenever it needs it. To be environmentally friendly any waste water is recycled, filtered and used again.

The flowers are all handpicked and hand packaged ( yes really!)

Phalenopsis Orchids, every plant has its individual watering system, and is supported from the pullies above.

Every orchid, cut and packaged by hand, in its own individual testtube to make sure it doesnt get thirsty !

They are picked and then placed onto an overhead system delivering them into the sorting area, ready to be quality checked, placed into boxes and loaded up ready to deliver to florists all over the world...

Last weekend we went on a wedding show road trip, visiting both the Designer Wedding Show in Battersea, London and the National Wedding Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
It was great fun being on the other side for once ( and pretending to be a bride! oops sorry guys, a few white lies told!;) . Our main mission was to have a look around in view of perhaps exhibiting next year, but it was great seeing other florists work and getting new ideas for our brides .
The Designer Wedding Show was amazing, with the most luxury products and services in every area of the wedding industry so was great for inspiration, not to mention the pink champagne! The National Wedding Show was an abundance of regional wedding suppliers with every service possible. Very tiring on the legs but a fabulous day out never the less!
The verdict: see you at the NEC next autumn!

The Pavillion Wedding Fayre -7th Oct 2009

What a busy wedding fayre it was! As it was held on an weekday evening we werent sure how successful it would be, but what a great job The Pavillion did to promote this event. Our vintage range was very popular. with brides loving the muted coloured rose varieties such as 'amnesia' and 'hypnose' . The vintage crockery and fairy cakes were kindly on loan to us by Vintage and Cake , who hire out these treasures for teaparties, weddings etc .

The next day we had 5 consultations booked so were very happy with initial interest!

Kathryn & Russell

Last weekend we provided the wedding flowers for our clients Kathryn & Russell. They had a lovely wedding day within the beautiful setting of Prestwold Hall.

For Kathryn we constructed a trailing bouquet of white phalenopsis orchids & ivory roses, with birch and rolled leaves. Russell wore a matching buttonhole.

For the venue we provided centrepieces of entwined white dendrobium orchids in modern goldfish bowls.

Wow what a busy day we had yesterday. We were very pleased to win a large order from one of our corporate customers. They ordered 27 bouquets to be delivered across Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire, so our little blossom tree van was filled to the brim with flowers !

Our customer chose a bouquet from our website called Rosie . A pretty pink handtied bouquet which includes pale pink sweet avalanche roses, pink bouvardia, alstromeria and eucalyptus.

All the lucky recipients were very pleased, and we had a lovely feedback email from the company who placed the order, so pat on the backs all round! :)

Wedding Fayre at The Priest House 06/09/09

We exhibited at a local wedding fayre held at The Priest House , nr Castle Donington.
Alot of excited brides came to visit our stand to discuss their ideas for flowers on the big day.
2010 is definately going to be a big year for weddings.
Unfortunately we didnt get very good photo's, (the flash didnt work on the camera), but here are a few. The goldfish bowl in particular was very popular, with the flower ' Gloriosa Lily' a definate talking point!

The table on the right showing our tall martini vase arrangement was styled by Tillyboo & included dusky pink vintage candles, coordinating chair covers and runners and cute vintage teapot cookies ! It looked so lovely!

Phew, what a busy few weeks its been at The Blossom Tree.

The first week of august was a VERY popular weekend to get married and it certainly kept us very busy & on our toes. Planned like a military operation, with hard work and lots of cups of tea we provided the flowers for 7 weddings (and a christening!). Everything of course went to plan,...apart from the weather! It was dreadful! The rain literally poured allday. I'm sure it didnt dampen any of our brides spirits thou . Congratulations to all of you! xxx

Two weddings this week.... one of which had a bit of a zesty theme.

The flowers for this wedding were to be very soft & feminine, we used beauties such as bianca roses (which smell heavenly), orchids, hydrangea & freesia.

We used 62 limes in the table arrangements... gin and tonic anyone??
